YAEL Women's Defence Guild is an Australian charity established to provide financial assistance and legal information to people advocating for women's rights and concerns under Australian law.
YAEL began when it became clear how often women were left to fundraise publicly for legal matters, while barristers and solicitors quietly gave pro-bono hours wherever funds couldn’t be raised. Some matters are barred by legislation from being reported publicly at all, which can prevent the people involved from seeking the support they need.
YAEL exists to help carry that weight: to make steady, fixed contributions toward legal costs so that standing up for women’s rights under Australian law isn’t something anyone has to do alone.
The first is Yael herself remembered for protecting her people through courage, resolve and resourcefulness when they were under threat, themes of protection, quiet strength and defending one's own.
The second is the word's other meaning: in Hebrew, yael is the nimble, sure-footed mountain ibex a creature of agility, footing and resilience, at home on the steepest climb. Together they speak to ascent, endurance, and standing firm.
YAEL is led by a volunteer board of women committed to its purpose.
Become a member, take on a role, or simply support the work every bit helps a woman stand up for her rights.
