On this page you can check whether your matter is eligible, see what help is available, and make a confidential inquiry. There's no obligation, and reaching out costs nothing.
What counts
What we mean by a women's issue
A women's issue is one that:
- pertains to the specifically female body;
- pertains to the gendered social expectations or norms attached to people who have female bodies;
- involves issues where women are the statistically predominant victim or marginalised class;
- involves issues where men are the statistically predominant perpetrator or oppressor class against women.
What help is available
Practical support for women's-rights matters
YAEL provides two things, and we’re clear about what they are and aren’t.

A fixed-amount grant toward legal costs.
This is a contribution toward the expense of your matter, not full funding of your case. Legal costs are high, and even a contribution can make a real difference.
2.
Free legal information
including connection with volunteer lawyers who can share general information.
we don’t fund whole cases, and we don’t source or provide lawyers to represent you. Our help is a contribution toward costs, plus information.
Am I eligible?
Who we can help
To apply, you must be a party, intervener, or amicus in a dispute under Australian domestic law. Your matter is eligible if:
- It is currently before a tribunal, court, human rights commission, or other statutory body with the power to administer or enforce Australian law;
- It is at any stage — from initial filing up to and including the final domestic avenue of appeal;
- it has exhausted all domestic avenues of appeal and is in contemplation of an appeal to a body that administers international law
- The subject of the matter concerns a women's issue.
